#21 Geekgasms: Knitting Chainmail

Most of you know I've been slowly working on a Chandra cosplay, from Magic the Gathering. This is definitely the most time and effort I've put into a cosplay thus far, and I've hardly even made a dent in it. All that means is that I'm going to be so completely proud of it when it's done!
So why the hold up? Well. I've been learning how to knit chainmail. And I feel so completely badass for doing so! This is by far the most tedious thing I have ever done in my life, and more than a little anxiety inducing since I'm starting with a turtleneck tanktop and I have absolutely no pattern and no previous experience. What in the actual fuck am I doing.
I've decided to start by making a tube to go around my torso, and then patterning out the rest of it from there. I'm doing this because the tube is an easy design, just a giant rectangle, so I have time to get accustomed to the process. It's also the mot daunting part of the garment due to sheer volume.
I am knitting it in such a way that the design should mold itself around my body and appear form fitting - which is not actually how actual chainmail armor is supposed to be knit, but that's what her armor looks like. Really, Chandra's armor is designed for visual aesthetics and not safety. If an enemy got close enough to her that she needed her armor to protect her, she'd be so dead. Luckily, she's usually too busy being on fire. So there's that.
I'm working with small aluminum rings. I chose aluminum because its light and easy to work with - perfect for wearing all day at a convention. Or at least, as perfect as I can get without resorting to plastic. It's still heavy. Just...less heavy. I chose the small size because...aesthetics. Larger rings would have taken less time, but I don't like their look as much.
I kept having to extend my deadline, pushing back my Chandra debut over and over. It's difficult for me to estimate when I'll be done since I've never worked with chainmail before. Or armor, for that matter. So I've decided to work without a deadline for now. I will continue to send updates whenever I hit certain milestones via my cosplay Twitter: @KattandTygah
On a completely unrelated topic, my roommate designed a 4 person Boss Monsters playmat that includes the Items mechanic and I am super stoked. It's going to get here on Friday. And we're going to play all of the Boss Monsters and kill all the heroes dead. I will post a picture of the mat!
